I know a lot of people don't do this often but it helps with service.

Dial *228 (it's airtime free). You'll get the option to press 1 to update your phone's software and press 2 to update your phone's roaming abilities.

Option 1 usually adds a little tweaks every few months - e.g. last update allowed me to get rid of the annoying verizon wireless banner than would take up space on the screen

Option 2 programs into your phone new towers that have been added to the Verizon Network or if Verizon has acquired new wavelengths of the broadcast spectrum per rulings with the FCC it'll allow you to use those as well (if you follow the wireless business they're constantly fighting over broadcast spectrum frequencies).

I like to do both options once a month, but it can't only be done in an area with Verizon service, not "Extended Network". Back home in Norton it's no problem, but elsewhere in the county it's "extended network" except for a few spots in Wise.

Hope this helps some people with coverage issues!

Thanks. Someone told me about this a while back, but I didn't know that you could not do it in an "extended network" area. Maybe that is why it didn't seem to help.

For back home in SWVA for the time being Alltel may be a far superior choice (I don't spend too much time back home anymore).

Verizon was trying to buy out Alltel 2 or 3 years back but the company was taken out of the public via private equity, and frankly ever since the ratings on the company have gone up and it's becoming a competitor in its own right instead of being the provincial entity it once was.
